The usual classification is first flush, second flush, monsoon, and autumn flush.

When it comes to the flushes, the first flush is more floral and also lighter in color. This makes the first flush more like the oolong teas. Some of these are very light and thus, they look more like green tea rather than black tea. The autumn and second flush Darjeeling black teas are darker than the first flush and the monsoon flush is the darkest and the strongest of all of them.
All flushes of the Darjeeling black tea are very different from each other, but there is also a difference in the tea depending on the tea estate they are grown in.
